Product Circularity for Cricket Gear & Clothing
22nd July 2025
12:00-13:00 BST
Online via Teams

Introduction

Cricket is the 2nd largest sport globally with over 300 million people playing the game at some level. Research completed by The Centre for Sustainable Design ® (CfSD) through the Platform for Accelerating Sustainable Innovation in Cricket (PASIC), has indicated that sustainability activities in cricket primarily focus on the impact of climate change on venues and grounds rather than cricket gear and clothing used to play the game. However, over 1656 tonnes of cricket gear come to end-of-life each year and cricket clothing also contributes to the 1.92 million tonnes of textile waste produced every year[1]. The webinar will present project experience related to circularity and cricket gear and clothing, and the lessons learnt for cricket gear sector and the wider sports industry.

The webinar will present the findings and conclusions from two projects

The PC4CREP project findings that will be shared include: prototype development of a pair of circular batting pads produced using pineapple biobased material; feedback from a visit to a cricket gear manufacturing site in Northern India; learnings will then be highlighted from the repair and refurbishment process of a pair of batting gloves and its implications for designing for disassembly, and the prototype development of repair kits to enable product life-extension. Finally, initial thinking related to the development of a local circular cricket gear social enterprise will be discussed.

The PSCP project will then be introduced followed by an overview of research into the cricket clothing value chain and discussion over findings from a visit to a cricket clothing supplier in India. Forthcoming policy and regulation for clothing and fashion will then be highlighted with the potential implications for the cricket clothing and apparel sector. The outcomes from a cricket clothing disassembly and upcycling exercise will also be presented alongside consumer insights into use phase issues related to cricket clothing based on a 500+ survey of recreational players in England and Wales.

The webinar will be followed by a Q&A session for further discussion.

Audience
The webinar will be of interest to various stakeholders across the cricket and other sports gear and clothing industries, including designers, suppliers, retailers, researchers, and policy makers, interested in implementing product circularity. Participants will also be able to explore the opportunities and challenges related to the implementation of product circularity within the cricket gear and clothing sectors and discover practical steps toward a more sustainable future in cricket and other sports.
