Circular Cultures in Wandsworth [2C]: Understanding place based Circular Economy Practices through the integration of PASIC Circular Cricket Gear Projects

[2C] project focuses on extending the life of cricket equipment through place-based reuse and repair systems, transforming underutilised gear into accessible resources for players who would otherwise face barriers to participation. Using Wandsworth as a case study, 2C will develop a replicable framework to evaluate local social impacts of cricket reuse and repair initiatives.

Background

With cricket being the world’s second largest sport, [2C] addresses a significant gap in sustainability of the sport by focusing on circular design for cricket gear—an area that remains under-researched despite between 100-300 million people participating in the sport recreationally/professionally.

The project will consolidate previous research on the environmental benefits of reuse—such as the development of the Reuse-Carbon (CO₂e) Calculator—while expanding focus toward the social impacts of circularity in cricket. Through place-based research in Wandsworth, including established reuse schemes with local clubs, the [2C] Project will develop and test a framework for measuring how access to second-life equipment supports participation, inclusion, and community development. It is anticipated that the outcome will be a scalable and replicable model for assessing and advancing circular practices in sport, with the potential to inform broader applications across regions and sectors.

[2C] project is funded by the University for the Creative Arts UKRI/AHRC Impact Accelerator award.
