CCG Hub

Circular Cricket Gear Hub (CCG Hub) collects unwanted cricket gear and clothing, and redistributes it to state schools and disadvantaged teams and individuals. CCG Hub is an initiative of Spencer ONE organised in partnership with The Centre for Sustainable Design ® and in collaboration with Surrey Cricket Foundation and Decathlon UK.

Background

Spencer ONE is an initiative of Spencer Cricket Club (SCC). SCC is the UK’s biggest recreational cricket club, with more than 1,550 members playing around 70 games per week. Players from SSC have gone on to represent Surrey and England at the professional level including Gus Atkinson and Alex Tudor, the current and past England and Surrey players.

Circular Cricket Gear Hub (CCG Hub) is based research and projects completed with The Centre for Sustainable Design ® (CfSD). Research and projects by CfSD within the PASIC project highlighted that millions of cricket gear and clothing items come to their end of life each year, often ending up stored in attics, garages and the backs of clubs; and some thrown away. Much of the gear and clothing is of good quality and can be reused.

Pilot projects organised at Spencer, Frensham and Rowledge cricket clubs in 2024 acted as ‘proof of concept’ and the lessons learnt were documented in a report.

CCG Hub is led by Spencer ONE partnership with in partnership with The Centre for Sustainable Design ® and in collaboration with Surrey Cricket Foundation and Decathlon UK. CCG Hub was launched on 1st July 2025 and will be organised until mid September 2025. From 2026, CCG Hub will operate between April and September each year.

Harrison Hinks, Club Support Officer, Surrey Cricket Foundation, highlights “The foundation is very happy to support and be a part of this exciting initiative. The reuse of kit will help to increase participation in cricket for those who may view the cost of equipment as a barrier to the game is a thrilling prospect.”

Chris Allen, UK Communications & Impact Leader, Decathlon UK, says, “We’re incredibly excited about this circular initiative. Cricket is a sport with deep roots in local communities and a strong sense of national pride, often nurtured through schools and clubs. Access to valuable equipment is often a barrier for many who want to play.

“By giving pre-loved gear a second life, we’re not only reducing waste, but we’re directly helping more people connect with this fantastic game, ensuring it continues to thrive at all levels.”

CCG Hub is part funded by UKRI via University for the Creative Arts, AHRC Impact Acceleration Account (IAA) through the User-friendly Online Reuse-Carbon (CO2e) Calculator for use by Cricket Clubs and Leagues [RCO2_Tool] Project
