Introduction
Vegan Leather Cricket Gear (VLCG) project was established to investigate the potential application of vegan leathers to cricket gear. The project is funded by UKRI via University for the Creative Arts, AHRC Impact Acceleration Account (IAA).
As a gear-intensive sport, cricket offers a great opportunity for the implementation of sustainable materials and design innovation. Bovine leather, a key material component in both balls and gloves has a high environmental impact. The leather alternatives sector is growing rapidly and range of innovative solutions that utilise various (natural) resources are being developed. However, publicly available information on these new alternative leathers is scarce and limited, as many companies are either in the research and development stage or early commercialisation stages.
Professor Martin Charter and Dr Lilian Sanchez Moreno from The Centre for Sustainable Design ® at the University for the Creative Arts, and Dr Darshil Shah from the Centre for Natural Material Innovation at the University of Cambridge will present and discuss the findings of the VLCG project with opportunities for dialogue with participants. Active feedback and discussion will be encouraged.
