Free 1 Day Training Programme for SMEs in the South-East

Organised by: The Centre for Sustainable Design

Supported by: Manufacturing Advisory Service – South East

Introduction

The need to address the environmental impacts of products across their life cycle is becoming increasingly important. The growing concern over major environmental issues such as climate change, destruction of habitat and depletion of resources is driving many countries to put legislation in place to ensure manufacturers address adverse life cycle environmental impacts of their products and take design steps to reduce these impacts by carrying out eco design. There is also increasing pressure on manufacturers from the market place to address these issues as the expectation for greener products grows. Companies already carrying out eco design are realising other benefits such as lower manufacturing costs and improved competitiveness.

Purpose of Training

To introduce the basic principles of eco design to designers, engineers and managers in manufacturing industries.

What attendees will learn from the programme

What attendees will be able to go away and do

Who is the programme relevant to?

The programme material is applicable to all manufacturering sectors. The event is targeted at manufacturers with less than 250 employees based in Surrey, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, E & W Sussex, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Kent and Milton Keynes. The workshop will be suitable for Managing Directors, Marketing Directors/Managers, Product Development Directors/Managers, Head of Engineering, Head of Design, Head of Innovation, Product Designers, Design Engineers and Consultants.

Structure of Programme

The programme consists of instructor led classroom training, incorporating presentations, demonstrations and practical exercises.

The morning covers the basic principles of eco design including an introduction to life cycle thinking and the assessment of product-related environmental impacts. This will be followed by a discussion of product specific environmental legislation impacting the manufacturing sector. There will then be a presentation over the basic process of eco design, showing how assessment of environmental impacts leads to specific design measures and how this process can be incorporated into the manufacturer’s existing design process, irrespective of the size or complexity. The interrelationship between eco design, ISO9001 and ISO14001 will also be covered for those attendees who have management systems based on or registered to these standards. There will then be a presentation on emerging eco design and product-related carbon footprinting standards e.g. ISO14006 and PAS 2050. The afternoon will focus on tools available to aid life cycle thinking, carry out quantitative life cycle assessment (LCA)/carbon footprinting and aid systematic application of the eco design process. This will include class exercises and demonstrations.
