John Whittall, Lead Technologist for Resource Efficiency at Technology Strategy Board will present on two live funding competitions.
The feasibility studies competition “New designs for a circular economy” is intended to help companies work with new partners to
radically rethink the design of products, components or systems to generate value by retaining or regenerating materials and
components over several cycles of use. Large companies can claim up to 65% of costs and SMEs up to 75% of costs of projects
up to £33,000. Sub-contracting within the UK is permitted where necessary to bring in relevant expertise, up to a limit of 75%
of the total project costs. The second round of this competition opens on 11 February 2013, with a mandatory registration
by noon 20 March 2013. The deadline for applications is noon 27 March 2013.

The collaborative research and development competition “Material Innovation for a Sustainable Economy” is aimed at encouraging the
development and application of sustainable materials, products and processes. Our aim is to support materials technologies that
rapidly meet urgent and difficult environmental and social challenges and that create wealth for the UK through the development and
implementation of new or improved materials, processes and products. Proposals must be collaborative and business-led and include
at least one small and medium-sized enterprise (SME). We expect to fund mainly industrial research projects in which a business partner
will generally attract up to 50% public funding for their project costs (60% for SMEs). Projects must last between 12 and 24 months
and we expect total project sizes to be between £250k and £750k. This is a two-stage competition that opens for applicants on 4 March 2013.
The deadline for registration is at noon 17 April 2013 and the deadline for expressions of interest is at noon
24 April 2013. More information on
