The SID Event: South-East, 15th September 2005 - Details
Sustainable Innovation & Design: Response to UK Sustainable Development Strategy

The UK Sustainable Development Strategy [SDS] (see http://www.sustainable-development.gov.uk) launched on 7th March 2005 highlighted a range of issues related to sustainable products, design and innovation - see Chapter 3. This coupled with the growing government interest in sustainable public procurement means that creating, designing and developing products with lower material and energy consumption will be of increasing importance. The Centre for Sustainable Design (www.cfsd.org.uk) will facilitate a second high-level, multi-stakeholder discussion on these issues with the aim of 'adding value' to the emerging debate. Speakers will comment on the strategy and their future visions for sustainable innovation and design. The event will also see the regional launch of www.o2uk.org - an informal network aimed at raising awareness of sustainable design issues. The cost of the workshop will be £20.00 + VAT

Workshop Afternoon 19th September 2005: Impact of the New EuP Directive on Industry - Details
Directive 2005/32/EC establishing a framework for the setting of ecodesign requirements for energy-using products has been published in the Official Journal on the 6th July 2005 and becomes EU law on the 11th August 2005. Member states have until the 11 August 2007 to transpose it into national law. A 3 year working plan will be produced not later than the 6th July 2007 of "implementing measures" setting specific standards for priority products. and giving a list of products to be included under the framework. However the following products have already been picked as very high priority and implementation legislation is starting now to include these before that date. They are:

  • Heating and water heating equipment,
  • Electric motor systems
  • Lighting in both the domestic and tertiary sectors
  • Domestic appliances
  • Office equipment in both the domestic and tertiary sectors
  • Consumer electronics HVAC (heating ventilating air conditioning) systems;

This legislation will have a much more profound effect on industry than even the WEEE and RoHS as it requires companies to practice and document eco-design when launching their products. The workshop will cover the requirements of the EuP directive and the changes of processes and management systems that will be required by industry to meet those requirements.
