Looking for a fun and creative summer holiday activity? Join The Centre for Sustainable Design® (CfSD) at the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) for a free, hands-on workshop where children and their parents or guardians can work together to transform old cricket clothing into exciting new creations while learning about the environment and the circular economy.
Introduction
Cricket is the world’s second most-played sport and relies on large amounts of specialist gear and clothing, much of which has a significant environmental footprint. In England and Wales alone, an estimated 1,646 tonnes of cricket equipment becomes waste each year. While sustainability efforts in the sport have often focused on venues and events, far less attention has been given to the clothing and gear players use.
Using donated end-of-life cricket clothing that would otherwise go to waste, families will explore how everyday items can be given a second life. Through fun challenges and creative activities, children will learn practical skills such as problem-solving, design thinking, basic sewing techniques, and upcycling.
Audience
The workshop is designed for pupils within Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum, typically covering children who have completed Years 3 to 6. All participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian for the full duration of the session.
The event is free of charge, but places are limited to 25 participants, so early booking is strongly recommended to secure your place.
Programme
The workshop will begin with a short, child-friendly introduction to the circular economy, showing how we can reduce waste and keep materials in use for longer, aligned with Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum. Participants will also see inspiring examples from experts in sustainable design from CfSD at UCA and discover how creative ideas can help tackle environmental challenges.
Families will then take part in an interactive design workshop using design and development methodologies, where they will work together to conceptualise, sketch, build, and share their ideas for giving cricket clothing a new purpose. The session will include group activities, discussions, and opportunities to showcase creations with other participants.
The workshop programme has been carefully designed in accordance with the KS2 curriculum, providing pupils with opportunities to develop knowledge, skills, and understanding across a range of subjects, offering a fun way to spend time together during the summer holidays while learning valuable skills for a more sustainable future.
